Hat day at Hearthstone at MurrayhillWe all know that eating well is important to keeping our muscles, bones, organs and other parts of our bodies working properly, but it is easier said than done, right?

Our admissions department often hears stories, usually from an adult child, who tells us their parent eats mainly canned soup, sandwiches, or tv dinners – most laden with high levels sodium. Some are worried their loved one might not even be remembering to eat or hear they aren’t hungry.

Poor nutrition is serious business and you might be surprised to learn why so many of our seniors are at risk. Depression can cause a decrease in appetite. Appetites of widows often decrease as does their enjoyment of meals. Those who live alone may lose the desire to cook because of loneliness. Widowers may have difficulty cooking because they never had to before. Many of the seniors we have living with us come from a generation where the wife did all the cooking and housework. Sometimes it is the lack of transportation that leads to a risk of malnutrition. Poor vision, dental health, and difficulties with swallowing or trouble holding utensils can also be a factor.

At Hearthstone we recognize the important role food plays in an older adult’s life. Eating well may reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some kinds of cancer, and anemia. At Hearthstone, our chefs prepare hot, nutritionally balanced meals with whole-grains foods, fruits and vegetables. Most of our residents love to finish off their meals with ice cream which we have plenty of and the best part is they have someone to eat with, have a conversation with and feel like they are part of the family.
